Contamination of food grade or animal feed supplements with genetically engineered (GE/GMO) bacteria is illegal in the European Union. In 2014, regulators in Germany and Italy sampling Chinese imports reported finding GE bacteria contamination in a vitamin B2 (riboflavin) supplement destined for animal feed. The report was published this year in the journal, Food Chemistry. (Paracchini, V., et al. (2017).
