Contamination of food grade or animal feed supplements with genetically engineered (GE/GMO) bacteria is illegal in the European Union. In 2014, regulators in Germany and Italy sampling Chinese imports reported finding GE bacteria contamination in a vitamin B2 (riboflavin) supplement destined for animal feed. The report was published this year in the journal, Food Chemistry. (Paracchini, V., et al. (2017). Molecular characterization of an unathorized genetically modified Bacillus subtilis production strain identifed in a vitamin B2 feed additive. (Food Chemistry, 230, 681-689.)
